Arts in the Schools

An education in and through the arts can increase student engagement, boost student achievement in all subject areas, and improve his or her ability to think creatively, which is a crucial skill for the 21st-century workplace. As is the case across the United States, budget cuts are forcing school systems and districts throughout Greater Birmingham to reduce their visual arts, music, dance and theatre programs.

To help make connections between schools and providers, the Cultural Alliance has developed an online database that serves as a hub for complete information about field trips, in-class presentations, and other educational enhancement activities in Jefferson and surrounding counties. In addition, the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham works to supplement arts education programs in the region’s schools and to provide arts and cultural offerings in those without arts teachers of their own.
