Kresge Arts in Birmingham

The Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan, is piloting a community arts and civic engagement project in Birmingham, Detroit, Baltimore, St. Louis and Tucson, that encourages residents to use art and culture as a tool to address community issues. The Kresge Foundation has enlisted the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham to administer the program entitled Kresge Arts in Birmingham.

Years One and Two  - Over a two year period, The Kresge Foundation funded grants ranging from $2,500- $10,000 for community arts projects that strive to address Birmingham’s pressing issues as determined by its citizens.

Year Three - Step Forward is a week-long leadership summit, March 10-15, 2013, reflecting the City of Birmingham’s civil rights commemorative theme of Fifty Years Forward. The summit is a call to action, asking current and future community leaders to step forward together in forming a better Birmingham for the future. A facilitation team from Urban Bush Women and People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond will lead the summit with participation from local historians and activists.
